UPDATED, false story: Cleric recommends gang rape

CORRECTION: This story was apparently fabricated and Alternet issued a correction. Interesting how we all thought it was terrible, yet believable that a cleric may actually say such things.

Without religion, how could we act morally?

Via Salon and Alternet:

A prominent Saudi cleric has issued a fatwa (a religious ordinance) that calls for the gang rape of Syrian women. Expressing frustration that the “warriors of Islam” fighting in Syria may be getting weary for the lack of sexual pleasure, the religious leader issued a decree that promotes hours-long “intercourse marriages.”

The cleric, Muhammed al-Arifi, who is a leading jihadist religious figure, made it clear that his edict called for the gang rape of Syrian women and girls. He specified that the “intercourse marriages” last only a few hours “in order to give each fighter a turn.” As to who is an eligible bride, the cleric approves any girls or women over the age of 14 who are widowed or divorced. Yes, you read that right. Any girls over the age of 14.

Full story at Salon.

Oh, and before you say “Christians would never say such a thing”, check your Bible. God recommends rape all over the place.

Hi there. Listen, I really love your blog, so please don’t take this as criticism. I just thought you should know that the story you’ve just quoted has been proven to be a hoax. Salon got it from AlterNet, who have issued an apology, which you can see here: http://www.alternet.org/world/exhibit-how-islamophobic-meme-can-spread-wildfire-across-internet Believe me, I agree withyou about the dangers of religion, both broadly and wih regard to Islam, but this particular tale of horror, it appears, isn’t true. Many thanks, story corrected!

        You’re welcome. 🙂

As for this: “Interesting how we all thought it was terrible, yet believable that a cleric may actually say such things.” …well, quite. One need only look at the proven hideous behaviour of religious leaders the world over (hello Pope Benedict XVI!) and virtually nothing will shock them.

Great blog. I’ll be back. 🙂

I would like to know which books in particular in the Bible is it written that God commanded rape?? Book, chapters and verses don’t just say things for the sake of filling the space. I find pple who (especially muslims) after they’ve been brainwashed since 7yrs till their adulthood, then try to teach the rest of Christians about the Bible very funny and a waste of every1s time. It’s realy funny, how would a muslim or a budhist teach me the Bible? Now, waiting for those books that preach rape please.

  3. RP says:

Dear Talon, sure, here are a few quotes from your divinely inspired moral instruction book, clearly condoning rape: http://www.evilbible.com/Rape.htm

As your response to this, please pick one of the following:
    A) Denial
    B) Denial
    C) Denial

    Best regards,

Now, this is the reason why I call u an educated fool. I repeat, u don’t have any wisdom or knowledge to teach me the Bible.. And 1st of all refering the Bible as Evil, while u claim to believe and follow Jesus’ teachings is sheer stupidity if not hypocrisy. To the point- lemme educate and ENLIGHTEN U, Judges is among the 1st books that give historical accounts, the title derives from the 12 heroes of Israel whose deeds it records, they were military leaders. The purpose of the Book is to show that the fortunes of Israel depended upon the obedience or disobedience of the pple to God’s law. U have to have a knowledge in history concerning this era. If u read to the end u find that during this time Israel had no King and they did as they please. For u to understand the Bible u need to be knowledgeable of history, their cultures and geographical maps, u r not! So how is it u would begin to teach pple about the Bible?? Please, step away from it, and leave it to those who have the wisdom and knowledge to teach it. Stick to ur Quran.

I love how, even when this story was shown to be utter bollocks, you tried to make out that the fact you fell for it was just even more evidence for the evil of religion.

I am an atheist, but people like you are pathetic and do the rationalist cause no good.

    • RP says:

Dear Gloone, you have a good point but the correction we made was quite clear. Still, for the sake of argument, it really wouldn’t be that surprising if an imam or a priest would say rape is a good thing. After all, it clearly says so in their moral instruction books, so it would be completely logical for them to take such a stand. What is actually surprising is how few of them refuse to acknowledge the divinely inspired text?

One apologetical tactic is that it’s some texts are symbolic or outdated and requires and new interpretation. But I don’t buy that argument. Stating the complete opposite of what’s in a text isn’t interpreting, it’s completely ignoring the text and making things up instead!
