From the most excellent Honest Atheist.
The generosity score for Utah should be taken with a barrel of salt. About 70% of Utahns are Mormons. Their “charitable contributions” consist mostly of a 10% tithe to their church, which is required in order to be considered a member in good standing. So it’s not as if they give out of the goodness of their hearts. It’s more like spiritual extortion. If you don’t pay, you don’t get into the Mormon VIP club in Heaven. The bulk of the tithes go to run the church rather than helping the needy.
