Religion is a direct threat to the survival of civilization

You say Christianity is less harmful than Islam? Really? Consider the inquisition, the witch burnings, scientists imprisoned or burnt at the stake, catholics and protestants still killing each other, pogroms still going on, the Pope still advising against condoms and against legal abortions – the list of dehumanizing atrocities committed in the name of faith never ends.

There is nothing – literally nothing – stopping Christianity from exploding into a militant, violent force again, just like it was before. I challenge you to imagine any atrocious idea – you can find full support for it in scripture, in theology, and in the minds of a gullible mob who need an enemy to hate.

When a person has strong faith that the creator of the universe agrees with his opinions, any action is possible, any action is legitimate, any action is mandated. That person is on a mission from the creator of the universe.

“The world is divided into armed camps ready to commit genocide just because we can’t agree on whose fairy tales to believe.” ~ Ed Krebs

“Your preachments are evil and are a direct threat to the survival of civilization.” ~ Christopher Hitchens

“Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.” ~ Steven Weinberg

“People in America look at extreme Muslims, and how they are brainwashed, but not at themselves.” ~ Heath Gresham

“Those who can make you believe absurdity can make you commit atrocity.” ~ Voltaire

“There is no humility in religion. The belief that the creator of the universe is taking a personal interest in you is deeply egotistical.” ~ Jack York

“I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do because it always coincides with their own desires.” ~ Susan B. Anthony

  1. Larry says:

Yeah, right, and they’re reading off the names of 3,000 people slaughtered by Christians this morning, September 11, 2011. Save your silly equivocation for those with low IQ’s and severe emotional retardation.

    • MT says:

Oh did I step on a sore toe there? Dear Larry, how delightful of you to divide the world into correct and incorrect belief.

Instead of insults, why not instead show that I’m wrong: demonstrate how non-Christians can trust that Christianity will never again develop into a violent force (just like today some islamists are violent). Last I checked there were 34,000 different registered denominations of Christianity. You know as well as everyone else that a whole bunch of those sects strongly wish for violent enforcement of their particular Christian agenda. Or perhaps you forgot that Christians IN OUR TIME murder other people and deny MILLIONS basic human rights?

Hey, I’ll make it easy and spare you a step:

If you say “Violent people are not real Christians,” I’d like to see proof that your God prefers your interpretation. (Note: a voice in your head does not count as proof.)
If you say “The Bible says nice things”, I’d like to point you to the Quran, which also contains a whole bunch of nice statements.
If you say “Jesus represents peace” then here’s an equally inane statement: “Islam is a religion of peace.”

I’ll spare you the work. You cannot demonstrate that Christianity is trustworthy, so you might as well go ahead and respond with more insults, or not respond at all.

You know why Christianity can’t be trusted? Because Christians obey a fucking voice in their head, that’s why!

Btw, I enjoyed your labeling our readers as unintelligent just because they dare think that human morals did not come from a magical space daddy, as told by a bunch of goat herders in the iron age middle east.

Loved the “Faith” pic there. Religion is the source of more hatred than any force on the planet. Take Larry, for example, who hates just because someone sees things differently than he does. Christians don’t even know what it is that they worship. The biblical god slaughters the innocent and commands genocide every few pages. Not to mention the atrocities commited by the church over the past several centuries. And nearly all religions are guitly of the same things. Fundamentalism rears its ugly head every day, spouting ignorance in every direction.. It’s pathetic.
